Nostalgia for an Invisible Youth
We now have a gay Sulu, a bisexual Yellow Ranger, and a promise of LGBTQ characters in future Star Wars films, but until very recently, queer characters in mainstream fantasy and science fiction have been few and far between. Many of us can relate to feeling invisible in our favorite media, loving the story but identifying with characters only through subtext. How might our childhoods have been different if we had seen ourselves in these worlds? How might today's increased representation effect the generation only now coming of age? Join us for an intersectional discussion about the importance of queer role models and the way fandom has adapted to historical invisibility.
