The Geeks OUT Podcast: State of the Queer
No matter how contentious and divided the world feels—and right now, it certainly feels that way—science ficiton, comics, and general nerdery bring us positive energy. Whether they’re framing the real world in some new, mind-expanding perspective on reality or helping you escape it, being a nerd can be pretty great. And there has never been a better time to be a gay nerd. Join our cross-section of queer geeks as we discuss the current State of Queer across nerdy pop culture—and maybe the larger world of art and fiction—and celebrate where we’ve come, and where we’re going.

Nostalgia for an Invisible Youth
We now have a gay Sulu, a bisexual Yellow Ranger, and a promise of LGBTQ characters in future Star Wars films, but until very recently, queer characters in mainstream fantasy and science fiction have been few and far between. Many of us can relate to feeling invisible in our favorite media, loving the story but identifying with characters only through subtext. How might our childhoods have been different if we had seen ourselves in these worlds? How might today's increased representation effect the generation only now coming of age? Join us for an intersectional discussion about the importance of queer role models and the way fandom has adapted to historical invisibility.

The Monstrous Queer
Horror stories hold up a funhouse mirror to the most extreme parts of our nature, using the familiar to allow us to experience the unimaginable extent of our potential, all from the safety of our sofas. As evidenced by our community’s recent celebration of the Babadook as a queer icon, the horror genre and its monsters are particularly resonant within the LGBTQ community. We ourselves are marginalized and misunderstood by a world that often fears us, but the horror genre is notoriously plagued by misogyny, racism, and homo- and transphobia. In this panel, we’ll talk about the way horror attracts marginalized audiences just as often as it alienates them. Where and how do we see ourselves in the thinly-coded monsters we’ve come to embrace? And what can we do to add our unique voices and experiences to these narratives thatseem so eerily familiar to us?

Cosplay and Consent
The last few years have shown a lot of movement toward understanding the need for harassment and consent policies that include and support cosplayers, but people still have questions about how to engage with cosplayers as fellow fans. And many cosplayers have questions about what reasonable expectations they should be able to have when it comes to wearing costumes at conventions. Cosplayers Marcy, Tea, Geisha, and Theo will be joined by inclusion consultant Jay to share their experiences with consent both good and bad, and what conventions -- and individual fans-- can do to make cosplay-friendly spaces for people of all genders and gender expressions.

Even as mainstream literature, comics, television, and film increasingly embrace diversity, writers continue to struggle with creating nuanced portraits of LGBTQ characters, especially those with intersectional identities. Talking About How Your Characters Talk
What your characters say and how they say it can be as essentially distinguishing as what they wear or who they love. But convincing, character-fueled dialogue that doesn't go the way of exposition is harder to write than it looks. In this hands-on writing workshop, we'll watch how the masters do it by dissecting a few dialogue scenes plucked from multiple genres, and then we'll practice mastering a few scenes ourselves. Writers of all genres and level of expertise are welcome!

Mutant Love
Despite being icons of social justice, the X-Men's collective romantic history is less progressive, with a canon full of amnesiac women, oblivious men, and a Blackbird full of other tired tropes. Are the X-Men so queer-coded that heteronormative relationships just don't feel right for them? And now that more and more X-Men are coming out, will their romance game improve?
